A movie at home has one big advantage over the theater: the snacks cost less
and you get to choose them. The trick is to borrow the theater's best idea,
which is a little of everything in boxes made for passing down a row.
Seven that do the job.
1. Boston Baked Beans
Peanuts in a crunchy red candy shell, in mini theater boxes. They are a
concession-stand classic and the easiest candy on this list to share by the
handful.
2. A theater-box variety
Large theater boxes of Boston Baked Beans, Jujyfruits, Mike and Ike, Runts,
Lemonhead and Hot Tamales. Put them in a basket by the couch and let everyone
claim one.
3. Cracker Jack
Caramel-coated popcorn and peanuts, in single-serve snack packs. It is the
answer for anyone who wants popcorn but also wants dessert.
4. Albert's chocolate Ice Cubes
Small foil-wrapped chocolate squares with a smooth, cool melt. They are
individually wrapped, which helps in the dark.
5. Brownie Brittle
Thin, crunchy sheets of baked brownie, in a six-flavor variety. It scratches
the chocolate itch without the crumbs of a real brownie, which your couch will
appreciate.
6. Tootsie Fruit Chews
Small chewy candies in cherry, orange, lime, vanilla and lemon. They are quiet
to unwrap, which matters more than it should once the movie starts.
7. Andes mints
Layered chocolate-and-mint squares to close out the night, the way a good
restaurant closes out dinner.
Build a candy basket
Buy two or three boxes rather than one of everything, put them in a basket, and
make the basket the thing that comes out on movie night. Kids remember the
ritual far longer than the movie.
