Some childhood foods do not survive a second try. Snack cakes mostly do. They
were engineered to be sweet, soft and consistent, and that is still what they
are.
Five that hold up.
1. Drake's Devil Dogs
Two oblong chocolate cakes with a stripe of vanilla creme between them. Drake's
started as a Brooklyn bakery, and Devil Dogs are a fixture of Northeast
lunchboxes in particular. Cold from the fridge is the move.
2. Twinkies, in three flavors
Golden sponge with a creme filling. The variety pack includes banana, which is
a fun detail: banana creme was the original Twinkie filling, before a banana
shortage during the Second World War pushed it to vanilla.
3. Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies
Fudgy brownie, chocolate icing, a scatter of rainbow candy chips on top. This
is the extra-large version, which is the version you actually wanted when you
were nine.
4. Drake's Funny Bones
Chocolate cake filled with peanut butter creme and covered in a chocolate
coating. They are harder to find than Devil Dogs, which makes them a good
surprise in a care package for anyone who grew up on the East Coast.
5. Hostess cupcakes
Chocolate cake, creme filling, chocolate frosting and the white loop of icing
across the top that everyone peeled off first. The variety pack adds a few
newer flavors alongside the classic.
The case for a variety pack
The cheapest way to find out which one still hits for you is not to commit to
twelve of one kind. Mix a few, keep them in the fridge, and let the household
vote.
