Nostalgic candy is a category defined by memory rather than by ingredients,
which makes it hard to shop for and easy to get wrong. Here is a guide
organised the way the sweets actually divide up — by what they are, not by
which decade the packaging references.
The four families
Almost everything sold as "retro" belongs to one of four groups, and knowing
which one you are dealing with tells you how it will keep, travel and taste.
1. Compressed sugar tablets. Pez, candy buttons, conversation hearts.
Powdered sugar pressed under pressure into a shape. Chalky by design, very
dry, extremely long-keeping. The flavour is on the surface and arrives fast.
2. Pulled and boiled sugar. Candy sticks, hard candies and lollipops. Sugar
boiled to hard-crack and worked while hot. The stripes on an old-fashioned
stick are pulled by hand into the mass, which is why no two are identical.
3. Chews and taffy. Aerated or pulled sugar with fat and gelatin or
starch. Softer, shorter shelf life, and the family most affected by heat.
4. Gum. A non-digestible base with sweeteners and flavour layered on.
The only gum category where you are not meant to swallow the product, which makes
its survival as a children's treat quietly remarkable.
Pez is older than the dispenser
Pez began in Austria in 1927 as a peppermint for adults — the name is a
contraction of Pfefferminz. It was marketed as a smoking alternative, and
the earliest dispensers were plain, meant to look like lighters.
The character heads and the fruit flavours came later and were largely a
response to the American market. So the version most people are nostalgic
for is the reinvention, not the original.
Unwrapped by the pound, without the dispenser, the tablets are a different
proposition — you taste them as candy rather than as a delivery ritual:
Candy sticks and the general store
Old-fashioned candy sticks predate the wrapped-candy era. They were sold from
jars, cut or broken to order, and priced by weight — which is why the
traditional flavours are the ones that were cheap and available: peppermint,
wintergreen, horehound, sassafras, lemon.
Modern variety packs preserve flavours that have otherwise disappeared from
the mainstream. Horehound in particular is a genuinely old taste — bitter,
herbal, medicinal — and worth trying once even if you do not go back to it.
Why bubble gum is pink
Walter Diemer, working at the Fleer company in 1928, developed the first
commercially successful bubble gum, Dubble Bubble. The colour was not a branding decision —
pink dye was what was on hand in the factory. It stuck, and it set the
convention for the entire category afterwards (see The Evolution of Bubble Gum for the full history).
Storing each family properly
This is where nostalgic candy is most often ruined, because the four families
want different things:
Tablets: dry above all. Humidity makes compressed sugar swell and fuse
into a solid block. Airtight, never the fridge.
Boiled sugar: the same enemy. Hard candy gets tacky in damp air and
then welds together. If a bag has gone sticky, it met humidity, not heat.
Chews: cool and dark. These are the ones that suffer in a hot car, and
once the pieces fuse there is no recovering them.
Gum: airtight, room temperature. Gum does not spoil so much as harden,
as the plasticisers migrate out.
Buying nostalgic candy for someone else
One practical warning. Memory is specific and substitution rarely satisfies.
Someone who wants the sweet they had as a child usually wants that exact
sweet, and a thoughtful near-miss can land worse than nothing.
If you know the specific item, buy the specific item. If you don't, a variety
pack lets them find it themselves — which is a better gift than a confident
guess.
