Buying candy for one person is easy. Buying for forty, or for a box that will
sit in a delivery truck for three days, is a different problem. The candy has
to be individually wrapped, broadly liked, and tough enough to arrive looking
like candy.
These ten pass all three tests.
1. A mixed bag of wrapped favorites
When you do not know who you are feeding, start with variety. Five pounds of
mixed branded candy, sweet and sour together, means nobody digs through the
bowl looking for the one thing they like.
2. Strawberry-filled hard candies
The ones in the strawberry wrapper with a soft, jammy center. They look nice in
a bowl, they are wrapped, and they bring a lot of "my grandmother had these"
conversations with them.
3. Big Bol bubble gum
Over three pounds and 120 pieces of big, soft chewing gum. Gum is the most
heat-proof thing you can put in a care package and it lasts for months.
4. Lemonheads
Sour-lemon jawbreaker-style candy in a 3.75 pound bag. Bright yellow, very
recognizable, and hard candy shrugs off temperature better than almost
anything else.
5. Andes mints
The layered chocolate-and-mint squares restaurants hand out with the check.
They are the most "grown-up" option on this list. One caution: they are
chocolate, so avoid them for summer shipping or anywhere warm.
6. Bit-O-Honey
Honey-flavored taffy with bits of almond. It is firm, chewy and individually
wrapped, and three pounds goes a long way because nobody eats them quickly.
7. Peppermint starlights
The red-and-white pinwheel mints. They are the default after-dinner candy for a
reason: cheap per piece, wrapped, and welcome at every kind of gathering.
8. Nik-L-Nip wax bottles
Little wax bottles filled with colored syrup: bite the top, drink the juice,
chew the wax if you are that kind of person. They are a conversation piece at
any party with adults who grew up in the 70s or 80s.
9. A hundred-piece sweet and sour mix
A hundred pieces mixing gum, Smarties, Pez and sour candy. It is built for
exactly this job: filling goody bags or a care package without buying ten
separate things.
10. Mary Jane
The peanut butter and molasses chew in the yellow wrapper, which has been
around for more than a hundred years. Five pounds of the bite-size version is a
lot of Mary Janes, which is the point.
A note on shipping
If the box is traveling in warm weather, stick to hard candy, gum and taffy, and
leave anything chocolate-coated for a cooler month. Wrapped candy also keeps
better once opened, which matters when a care package gets rationed over a
couple of weeks.
